On May 31st, nearly 90 leaders from Northeast Houston gathered for Homestead Reimagined—a community meeting at New Hope Baptist Church, organized by TMO leaders. The event focused on redeveloping a former Kmart shopping center off Homestead Road, which has remained abandoned for the past 30 years.
The leaders emphasized the city’s repeated failure to carry out proper demolition and repair orders over the past two decades, highlighting the urgent need for a development that would provide real benefits to the community and eventually fill the large, vacant retail space. Leaders repeatedly identified the need of a grocery store in this food desert.
City Council members Davis, Ramirez, and Plummer, who were elected citywide, were present and pledged to work with TMO and community leaders to ensure that the latest demolish/repair orders are followed through. They also committed to collaborating on long-term efforts to bring much-needed improvements to the area.
