TMO leaders and others in their communities have been detained and deported while at work, after dropping their children off at school, and upon calling the police for help after experiencing domestic violence. In response, TMO organized 27 Know Your Rights and Family Safety Workshops and Immigration Civic Academies with over 2,000 community members from 21 congregations in Brazoria, Fort Bend, and Harris Counties.
In partnership with American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program (HVLP), experienced immigration lawyers presented information about the new enforcement of immigration laws and what it means for families and immigrant rights. They gave clear advice, participated in small group conversations with immigrant families, and responded to participants’ questions individually and in small groups.
HVLP attorneys work with families to develop powers of attorney so immigrant parents can better protect their children, homes, and assets. TMO, congregation and community leaders are essential to make the sessions welcoming and effective.
Those in attendance were equipped with accurate information about their constitutional rights and were given informational guides such as Family Safety Kits to protect children, spouses, and assets in the event of the detention or deportation of their loved ones.
Despite increased federal funding for the unconstitutional detention of law-abiding immigrants, TMO remains committed to building trust and developing leaders who will stand in solidarity with immigrant families, working to ensure their safety and ability to thrive.
